Does your current kitchen inspire you to cook? Does it make you want to pull out all of your pots and pans so you can get started? Or does it make you want to hide from the world so no one sees your space failure?

If the answer is yes to either of these questions, there’s a good chance you’d like to design your kitchen instead. But how do you go about designing your kitchen? Follow these 7 simple design tips and soon enough, you’ll be able to visualize exactly what yours will look like and feel.

Sketch It Out

If you’re the visual type, this tip will be super helpful for you. Instead of trying to visualize it in your head when you can simply draw it out, you’ll be much more likely to retain that image long-term. It’s no wonder so many people fail when it comes to design.

By sketching out what your kitchen will look like, you can map out all of your design ideas. You’ll be able to visualize how your space will feel, what it will look like, and what you’ll be able to do in it. Sketch out your kitchen and get a feeling for the space. You don’t have to stick to the exact measurements, just the general layout. Sketch out the space on paper or in your kitchen’s design program.

Make sure you draw out the space from both the living and dining areas. You’ll be able to better visualize your design ideas by seeing the space from multiple angles. It’s also a good idea to sketch out your ideas for future renovations, like if you’re looking at putting in a sub-zero refrigerator or getting a new island installed. It’ll help you envision what you’ll be able to add later.

Revamp the Vanity and Counters

When you’ve sketched out your entire kitchen, it’s time to map out the design details of the rest of the space. While your sketching was for visualization purposes, now you can get down to the nitty-gritty of design details. Before you start redesigning your cabinets and counters, though, you need to think about how you want your new pieces to be. Here are some things to think about.

What will your style be? If you have a modern kitchen, revamp your counters to match. If you have a more classic style, revamp your vanity to match. The colour of your cabinets will also have an impact on your new designs. Different colours go best with different styles. For example, grey cabinets go well with classic styles while dark cabinets go well with modern styles.

Decide Where Everything Will Go

While you were sketching out your design ideas, you also had the opportunity to decide where everything will go in your kitchen. Again, you didn’t have to stick to the exact measurements, just the general layout. Once you have the general layout decided, you can then turn your attention to the details of the new design. Your decision about where everything will go will have a big impact on your design.

Here are some things to think about. Where will your appliances go? Are all of your appliances on one side of the kitchen? If so, is there a spot on the other side that could be better? If not, what would you change? Will your sink be in the centre of the space or on one of the ends? What impact will it have on your design?

Think Colorful

Your kitchen design tips also suggest that you think about where you can add some colour. You don’t have to go full-on wild with it, but it does help to add a splash of something fun to your space. It doesn’t have to be something huge, either. A small accent wall or a throw pillow in a spot can add a lot of colour to your space. A colourful kitchen is not just a nice feature, it can also keep your mind from strolling down the path of kitchen boredom.

Don’t Forget About Storage

When you think about adding colour to your space, don’t forget to think about storage. You don’t want your kitchen to be completely boring and empty. There are so many different ways you can store things in a kitchen, like shelving, drawers, and cabinets.

Which of these will you be adding to help spice things up? The last thing to remember while revamping your kitchen design tips is that you need to be budget-conscious.

That means you can’t spend more than you originally planned. That goes for the renovation of your current kitchen as well as the design of your new one. You don’t want to go overboard or spend your money on things you don’t need. It’s always better to revamp your design and your budget in small, manageable portions.

Planning for Future Developments

If you’re planning on redesigning your kitchen at some point, be sure to keep these design tips in mind. You don’t want to rush into the renovations and make a ton of mistakes. It’s better to make sure you’ve fully thought things through. Choosing the right contractor is key.

Not only will this contractor be able to help you get the best deal on your home improvement project, but they’ll be able to help you with future renovations, too. That means if you decide you’d like to add a sub-zero fridge or a new island down the road, you’ll know who to call.

Wrapping up

If you’re fed up with your current kitchen and want to start over, revamp your vanity and counters, and think about where you can add some colour, you can do it. Follow these design tips and soon enough, you’ll be designing your dream kitchen. Best of luck!
