For kids, their room is their world. It’s where they spend most of their time, so it’s important to get it right. The right furniture and decor will encourage your child to play in the room and enjoy being there. Kids’ rooms need to be fun, stimulating places where children can learn through exploration and play.

Choose the right furniture and you’ll kickstart your child’s imagination while encouraging active learning. Here are some tips on how to choose the perfect furniture for your kid’s room:

Size matters

The first thing you need to do when you’re decorating a kids’ room is to get your measurement of the room. How big is it? The room’s size is crucial when you’re choosing furniture because it can make or break your decor.

If the room isn’t big enough, you’ll struggle to find furniture that looks appropriate, let alone fits the room. If the room is too big, you’ll have to make choices that are too small or are more expensive than you need to.

Ask yourself: “What does my child love?”

While you’re choosing furniture, take a moment to break down the room into different categories. Which types of furniture are in the room? What are their functions? Now, think about how you want those functions to feel in your room.

Are you wanting your child’s room to feel like a playroom? A bedroom? A study space? Once you’ve figured out the general mood you’d like to create in the room, you can start finding the perfect pieces of furniture to get there.

Choose colours that inspire play and learning

Kids love colours. You can use colours in your room to inspire your child’s curiosity and creativity. This can be done in different ways. You can paint the walls in your room with an array of colours that inspire your child to use them in their artwork.

You can also use decorative pillows with prints and patterns that stimulate their imagination. You can use wall switches and light fixtures with different colours. You can also hang posters or art prints in your child’s room that encourage them to use their imagination while learning.

Encourage movement by climbing and balancing furniture

Kids love movement. With climbing and balancing furniture, you can encourage your child to move and explore the different parts of their room. This is particularly important if your child has ADHD or ASD. Movement can help them focus and manage their behaviour.

Climbing on climbing furniture is great for developing gross motor skills, but it can also help your child express themselves creatively. If your child is unable to climb safely, you can still encourage movement in the room by putting out stacks of books and toys.

The act of exploring and learning from these items is great for developing fine motor skills. Climbing and balancing can also be great for stress relief. Slides are a great way to get your child moving and to help them relax. You can also try out aromatherapy oils or diffusers to provide a more relaxing environment.

Sturdy, safe and easy to climb on

Kids are curious. They love to explore new things and are likely to be constantly asking questions. When choosing the right furniture for your child’s room, choose pieces that are sturdy and safe. You want to make sure that the pieces you choose don’t pose a risk of injury to your child. This can be achieved by choosing furniture that is adjustable, non-toxic or non-permanent.

You also want to make sure that the pieces you choose can be safely used by children. This is particularly important for furniture like beds, walkways and stairs. When choosing what pieces to use as your walls, floors or ceilings, make sure they are safe and don’t pose a risk of injury. You can use panels, gypsum board or paper to decorate your walls. When climbing on furniture, make sure it’s sturdy and non-permanent. You can also use low furniture like a bed, desk or table to get your child off the ground.

Play the role of a teacher by providing a place for homework and reading

Kids need to be actively engaged in their learning. This is why you should make a homework space a focal point in your child’s room. This can be achieved by using a wall-mounted bulletin board or a shelf in your child’s room. Wall-mounted bulletin boards are a great way to help your child organise all their school-related items, like homework and reading materials.
