‍The kitchen is the heart of your home. It’s where you spend most of your time and it should be a place where you feel comfortable and happy when you’re in it. That’s why designing a kitchen is so important. You can have the most beautiful cabinets, countertops, flooring, lighting, and appliances but if your layout doesn’t make sense or feels dated then it won’t be enjoyable to use. If you have just moved into a new house or plan on updating yours soon then follow these tips for design success.

Plan Ahead

Before you start looking at samples and dreaming about the perfect layout and finishings you want in your new kitchen you should have a general idea of what you want. Take some time to think about what you do in your kitchen and why you do it. What’s the main event or activity you do there? What are your needs as a person and a family? Then look at your current space and your daily routine to get a better idea of what you have and don’t have.

You can use online kitchen planning tools like Houzz or design apps on your phone to get an overall idea of your layout and how everything will fit. Having an idea of where you want to go will help you plan and think about the layout and finishes you want in your new space.

Make a List

If you want to make sure you don’t miss anything and don’t get caught off-guard by how big the space is when you start looking at options then make a list of everything you want in your new kitchen. Make a list of the equipment you want, the finishes you like, and any ideas you have for layouts or designs you like.

Looking over your list you can cross off anything on your must-haves list and add any items you think you might want to check out further down the list. This will help keep you focused and on track with your list. Keep your must-haves and nice-to-haves list as separate as possible. That way if one thing you thought you might want is out of your price range then you can still cross it off your nice-to-have list.

Measure Often

Measure twice and cut once. These are great words to live by when it comes to designing your kitchen. Make the space you’re designing into the space you currently use in your home. Take measurements of everything; the space itself, the walls, the floor, and the cabinets and drawers. This will help you get an idea of what you have and what you don’t have and make the measurements more accurate. It’s also a good idea to take measurements of your current kitchen. You might be surprised at how much smaller your new space is going to be!

Decide What You Want Before You Start Looking For It

Before you start searching for appliances and finishes you want in your new kitchen you should decide what you want. This will help you narrow down your options. Start by thinking about what you do in your kitchen and why you do it.

Stay Organized

If you have more than one kitchen in your home then you already know that it can be hard to keep them all organized. Luckily if you have a large space you can make your kitchen more than one room. Try to think of your kitchen as more than just a space with cabinets and appliances. Include things like the island, sink, and countertops. These are all important aspects of your kitchen and they all have a specific layout and design. This will help you keep everything in better order and make your design easier to use.

Don’t Skimp On Good Things

When it comes to your kitchen you don’t want to skimp on any of the good things. You want solid cabinets, an efficient layout, and a kitchen layout that works for your family. Make sure everything from your cabinets to your appliances to your flooring is well-made and high quality. This goes for your kitchen remodelling contractor too. You want to work with a contractor that has years of experience and is well-respected.

Conclusion

Your kitchen is the heart of your home.

Plan ahead, make a list, and measure often. These will help you get to where you want to be with your new kitchen faster.
