If you’re anything like me, your kitchen is probably boring AF. Maybe because it’s so tiny, or maybe just because there are so many ways to amp up the style of any space with a little creativity and imagination. Even if you have an amazing countertop and some super functional installed cabinets, you might still be feeling a little blah about that space.

You could find a lot worse places to hang out than your home (that’s for sure), but it could certainly use a refresher or two to encourage more people to spend time with their friends and family there instead of on the sofa or iPad…if you know what I mean.

A few well-chosen accessories can transform even the most vanilla of spaces into something that feels fresh again. So here are 5 quick and cheap DIY tips we found online if you want to update your tired old kitchen in no time at all:

Add height to your kitchen

Whether you’ve got a super high ceiling in your kitchen or not, adding some height to your space will instantly add height to your mood. It’s just a fact that a higher ceiling will make any room feel more spacious. It might not be the most practical thing to do, but it’s a great way to make the most of the space you’ve got in that little kitchen of yours.

Plenty of people have found that you can make the most of a small kitchen by installing a few vertical shelving units or hooks. Especially as these can double up as a storage solution as well. It’s a great way to maximize the space you’ve got, especially if you’ve got a high ceiling.

Have some colour

One of the quickest ways to inject some life into any space, especially a kitchen, is to go for some bold colours. Yes, even in a tiny room. If there’s one certain thing, it’s that bright colours will instantly brighten up any room, and you’ll be surprised to learn that they’re easier to clean than standard shades.

Moreover, they’re much more inviting and welcoming. It’s the kind of thing that makes a room feel bigger, even if it’s a tiny one. If you’re not sure where to start, you can never go wrong with a splash of colour in fresh-looking jars or jars on display. Once you’ve added some oomph to your collection, you can always let your creativity flow and come up with other ways to use the space.

A countertop that doesn’t go with the rest of your décor

While great-quality tiles look stunning in any space, it’s important to note that you shouldn’t use them with a mismatched look for your kitchen’s countertop. That’s because your tiles will inevitably be the centre of attention when people enter your home, and nothing will ruin the mood faster than a mismatch.

Therefore, we advise against using tiles of a different colour or material with a countertop that doesn’t match the rest of your kitchen’s décor. For example, if you have a shiny grey kitchen with a wooden countertop, you should avoid using black tiles. The same goes for tile colours if your kitchen has a light wooden colour. Think ahead and keep your tiles in line with the overall style of your kitchen.

Store away all that clutter

If you’re struggling to find a spot to store all your kitchen appliances, pots and pans, and other detritus, consider doing what many people have done before you — create a kitchen storage unit! It’s a great way to easily compartmentalize your pots and pans, cutlery, and other bits and bobs.

If you don’t have a dedicated spot to store your pots and pans, this is a great way to make the most of a small kitchen by keeping them out of the way. Perhaps your kitchen cabinets are just too full to accommodate a storage unit? If that’s the case, we have some great news.

Restore a favourite piece of furniture

If your kitchen cabinets are looking a little scruffy, consider restoring a favourite piece of furniture. It could be a wooden sideboard, a vintage dining table, or even a century-old armchair. These kinds of pieces often cost little money, and it’s relatively simple to restore them using a few basic techniques.

Moreover, it’s a great way to add some warmth and character to your home without spending too much money. It’s a great way to inject some life into a room that you might otherwise be feeling is a little grey and boring.

Look for new ways to use your space

Before you throw all your energy into updating your kitchen, take a step back and think about how you use the space. Perhaps, rather than updating your kitchen, you should invest some time in upgrading the other areas of your home, such as your living room or family room.

That way, you can use your kitchen as a secondary space and have more energy to spend in your larger, more comfortable spaces. Although we don’t want to downplay the need for a kitchen renovation, we do think it’s worth taking the time to think about how you use your space. It might surprise you to learn that you use your kitchen much less than you think.

Wrap up

Kitchens are the most popular room in the house. But they can be boring, with limited storage space and not enough room to work. Don’t let a small area hold you back! The key is to not make the same mistakes you’d make throughout your home, whether they’re small glitches or big flaws. To make your kitchen the room that you want it to be, follow these quick and cheap DIY tips. They’ll help you refresh your space and make it feel brand new again.
