Most appliance repairs go wrong before the engineer arrives: the wrong model number, a machine that cannot be reached, nobody in to answer the door, and a fault that has mysteriously stopped happening. This checklist is for anyone booking washing machine repair in Croydon. Work through it in the days before the visit and on the morning itself, and the engineer will spend the time you are paying for fixing the machine rather than finding it.

When you book

  • Model number and serial. Open the door; the sticker is usually on the rim of the door opening or on the back of the machine. Photograph it and read it out when you call.
  • Age and warranty. Find the receipt or order email. If the machine is under the manufacturer’s warranty, or under two years old, Citizens Advice suggests the retailer or manufacturer is the first call under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not an independent engineer.
  • The fault, in plain words. What it does, what it does not do, any error code, any noise, any smell, and when it started. “It stops at the spin and shows a drain code” is far more useful than “it is broken”.
  • The fees. Confirm the call-out or diagnostic charge, whether it is deducted from a repair, the hourly or fixed labour rate, and the guarantee on parts. Appliance repair cost varies more between firms than most people expect, so ask.
  • Parking and access. Say whether the engineer can park outside, whether there is a permit zone, and whether the machine is up stairs or in a flat with an entry system.
  • Integrated or freestanding. Integrated machines behind a cupboard door take longer to remove. Say so.

The day before

  • Empty the machine of washing and leave the door open so the drum dries.
  • If the drum is full of water, drain it through the filter flap at the bottom front, with towels and a tray, so the engineer is not starting with a flood.
  • Clear the floor in front of the machine and the worktop above it. The engineer needs to pull it forward at least a metre.
  • Move anything stored on top of or beside the machine, and anything in the cupboard under the sink if the hoses run there.
  • Check where the socket and the water valves are. If the socket is behind the machine and inaccessible, note which breaker on the consumer unit feeds it.
  • Write down the error code and the sequence of events while you remember them. Faults that stop happening on the day are common and expensive.

On the morning

  1. Confirm the time slot by text or phone if the firm offers it.
  2. Be in, or arrange for an adult who knows what the fault is to be in. A missed visit is usually charged.
  3. Keep pets and children out of the kitchen while the machine is pulled out and open.
  4. Have the model photo, the receipt and the error code ready on your phone.
  5. Decide in advance the maximum you are willing to spend, so that you can make a repair-or-replace decision on the spot without being pressured.

While the engineer is there

Ask them to show you the failed part and explain the fault. Ask for the quote in writing, by text or email, before they fit the part, and check that the parts guarantee is on the paperwork. If a part has to be ordered, agree the return visit date and whether a second call-out fee applies. If the engineer recommends replacement, ask why in terms of the specific fault and the age of the machine, and do not feel obliged to buy anything from the van. Pay by card or bank transfer and get a receipt with the firm’s name and address on it; a cash-only engineer with no receipt leaves you with no comeback if the repair fails. Good appliance repair engineers expect all of these questions and answer them without fuss.

What is different in Croydon

Croydon’s housing stock runs from Victorian terraces in the older districts to large estates of 1930s semis in the suburbs and modern flats in and around the town centre. The semis are the easiest for an engineer: a kitchen at the back, often extended, with a freestanding machine and a driveway to park on. The terraces are tighter, with galley kitchens and the machine sometimes in a rear addition reached through a narrow passage, so measure the gap and mention it. The town-centre flats are where booking-day problems happen: visitor parking that must be arranged with the concierge, lifts, entry phones, and building rules about tradespeople, so sort those out the day before. Many Croydon homes are rented, and if yours is one, report the fault to the landlord or letting agent in writing before booking anyone, since an appliance the landlord supplied is normally theirs to repair and a tenant who books an engineer without agreement may not be reimbursed. The same local firms that handle dishwasher repair in Croydon usually cover washing machines, so one call can deal with both if you have two faults. Croydon Council offers a bulky waste collection for a fee if the verdict is replacement and the retailer will not take the old machine. Any private clearance firm must be registered with the Environment Agency as a waste carrier.

When to call a professional

This checklist assumes you have already decided the job needs an engineer, but the lines are worth stating. Do not open the back or base of the machine; the motor, heater and pump wiring are live when it runs. If the machine has tripped the electrics, leave it off until it has been inspected. Any new circuit or consumer unit work is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and must be done by a registered competent person with NICEIC, NAPIT or a similar scheme. If your kitchen has a gas hob or cooker next to the machine and the engineer needs to move it, only a Gas Safe registered engineer can disconnect and reconnect gas. In pre-2000 homes, which is most of Croydon, do not cut into unknown panels or floor tiles to reach the plumbing; asbestos is possible. And if the engineer is uncertain whether the fault is the machine or the drains, a plumber may be the right second call.

Questions people ask

Where do I find the model number on a washing machine?

Open the door and look at the sticker on the rim of the door opening, or check the back of the machine. Photograph it; the engineer needs the full model number, not just the brand, to bring the right parts.

Will I be charged if I am out when the engineer arrives in Croydon?

Most firms charge for a missed visit because the time slot is lost. Confirm the slot the day before and make sure an adult who knows the fault is at home.

Should I let the engineer sell me a replacement machine on the day?

Only if you had already decided your repair limit and the quote exceeds it. Ask the engineer to explain the specific fault and why a repair is not worthwhile, and compare their replacement price with a retailer before agreeing.
