A dishwasher that will not drain, leaves dishes dirty or refuses to start is often not broken at all. Many call-outs end with the engineer clearing a filter, straightening a hose or resetting the machine, and charging for the visit. Before you book dishwasher repair in Birmingham, work through these checks. They are safe, take under half an hour, and will either solve the problem or give an engineer what they need to fix it on the first visit.

First: isolate it safely

Switch the machine off at the socket or the fused spur, often a switch on the wall above the worktop. Leave the water on unless the machine is leaking, in which case close the small valve on the supply pipe under the sink. Have a torch, towels and a shallow tray to hand. Do not remove any screwed-on panel or touch the heating element or wiring. Everything below is reachable from inside the open machine or from under the sink.

The checks, in order

  1. The filter. Lift the bottom basket out, twist out the cylindrical filter at the base and clean it under the tap. A filter clogged with grease, glass and labels is the most common cause of poor washing and slow draining. Check the sump below it for broken glass and food.
  2. The spray arms. Pull them off, usually a twist or a clip, and check the holes are clear of cocktail sticks and pips. Make sure they spin freely when refitted and that a tall pan is not stopping the top arm.
  3. The drain hose. Under the sink, follow the hose to the trap or standpipe. A kink, a tight loop or a hose pushed too far into the trap causes drain errors. Check the spigot on the sink trap is not blocked.
  4. The inlet. Confirm the supply valve is fully open. A valve left half closed after plumbing work causes slow filling and timeouts.
  5. The door. A machine that will not start is often a door not latching because a basket is out of position. Close it firmly and listen for the click.
  6. Salt and rinse aid. White film and cloudy glasses are usually a salt or rinse aid problem rather than a fault.
  7. A reset. Note any error code shown, then switch off at the wall for a few minutes and back on. Many control faults clear.

What the error code is telling you

Most modern dishwashers show a code, or a flashing light pattern, when they stop. The manual, usually available online by model number, will decode it. Broadly, codes group into drainage, filling, heating, water in the base (which trips the anti-flood switch and stops everything), and door or control faults. Write the code down. Telling the engineer the code and the brand means they arrive with the likely part, which turns a two-visit repair into one.

Information to have ready when you call

  • Brand and the full model number, from the sticker on the door edge.
  • Approximate age and whether it is still under the manufacturer’s warranty.
  • The error code and exactly what the machine does and does not do.
  • Whether it is integrated behind a door panel or freestanding.
  • Whether it has leaked, and where the water came from.
  • Which of the checks above you have already done.

If the machine is less than a couple of years old, Citizens Advice’s guidance is to approach the retailer first under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, because an early fault may be theirs to put right. Searching for kitchen appliance repair near me will bring up plenty of firms, but the retailer is the right first call for a young machine. Home insurance does not usually cover the breakdown of an appliance, only damage caused by it, so a leak that has ruined a floor is a claim and a failed pump is not.

What is different in Birmingham

Birmingham’s housing stock is large and varied, and much of it is rented. In the Victorian terraces of the older inner areas, kitchens are often small rear extensions with the dishwasher plumbed into an existing sink waste, so drain hose runs are long and prone to kinks; that is the first place to look. Interwar semis in the suburbs tend to have refitted kitchens with integrated machines, which are fiddly to pull out and worth mentioning when you book. The city has a very large number of HMOs and student lets, and in a shared house the dishwasher is usually the landlord’s appliance; report the fault in writing to the landlord or agent before you call anyone. Parking in much of the inner city is permit controlled, so tell the engineer where a van can stop. Firms offering washing machine repair in Birmingham generally handle dishwashers too. Birmingham City Council runs household recycling centres that accept electrical appliances and a chargeable bulky waste collection if the machine is finished. Anyone else who takes it away must hold Environment Agency waste carrier registration.

When to call a professional

Stop and ring an engineer when there is water in the base and the anti-flood switch has tripped; the machine trips the electrics; the element does not heat; the pump hums but does not drain after the filter and hose are clear; or there is a leak from the door seal or the tub. Do not take the base apart yourself; the heater and pump connections are live when the machine runs. Any new circuit for the kitchen or work at the consumer unit is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and should be done by a registered competent person with NICEIC, NAPIT or a similar body. If the fault is with a gas appliance next to the dishwasher, only a Gas Safe registered engineer may work on it. In homes built before 2000, old floor tiles and panels can contain asbestos, so do not cut into them to reach a hose.

If the checks above have not solved it, describe the fault, the error code and the model to The Household Daily’s help desk and we will help you take the next step towards a repair.

Questions people ask

Why does my dishwasher show a drain error when the filter is clean?

Check the drain hose under the sink for a kink and the spigot on the sink trap for a blockage. If both are clear and the machine still will not drain, the pump has usually failed or jammed, which is an engineer's job.

Does home insurance cover appliance repair for a dishwasher?

Usually not. Standard policies cover damage an appliance causes, such as a leak ruining a floor, but not the breakdown itself, unless you have added appliance or home emergency cover. Check your policy wording.

Who repairs the dishwasher in a rented house in Birmingham?

If the landlord supplied it and the tenancy agreement lists it, the landlord is normally responsible. Report the fault in writing to the landlord or letting agent before booking an engineer yourself.
